NSW: Presumption against bail in NSW

Bail laws in New South Wales have been tightened with the passage of new legislation.

Criminals charged with firearms offences and repeat offenders will now face a presumption
against bail when they appear before the courts.

NSW Police Minister JOHN WATKINS says the law means hundreds more offenders will wait
behind bars for their court appearances.

He says the legislation targets the worst type of offender.

He says repeat offenders can't continue to hurt the community if they're sitting in
a prison cell.

The legislation also contains provisions for police to automatically seize bail money
from anyone who fails to appear for their court hearings.
