FED: 1969 cabinet gave in principle OK for reactor

CANBERRA, Jan 1 AAP - It scarcely seems conceivable nowadays but the government of
John Gorton nearly gave Australia its very own nuclear power station on Commonwealth land
at picturesque Jervis Bay, NSW.

Cabinet documents for 1969, released by the Australian Archives under the 30-year rule,
reveal that the government gave the go-ahead in principle for construction of a 500 megawatt
pressurised heavy water nuclear power station at an estimated cost of $131.3 million.
